Mission & Objectives

our Mission & objectives

The African Society of International Law (AfSIL) is a network of practitioners, scholars, technocrats and students engaging with international law as practiced, implemented, and forged in Africa. The Society seeks in particular to: 

 

  • Amplify the voice of African states and Africans in international law;

  • Foster inquiry, exchange of ideas and innovation in international law as it is developed and implemented in Africa;

  • Promote and support the study and practice of international law on the Continent;

  • Share information on international law opportunities such as scholarships, internships, speaking engagements, publications, and employment;

  • Celebrate the accomplishments of its members in the field of international law.

 AfSIL Bureau 

AfSIL was formed in 2012, by the founding Bureau members Raymond Ranjeva, Maurice Kamto, Makane Moïse Mbengue and Yenkong Hodu. The Bureau is currently composed of the following members:

President

Makane Moïse Mbengue is the President of the African Society of International Law (AfSIL) since 2017.

Karim M’ziani

Deputy Secretary General

Karim M’ziani is an Associate in Foley Hoag’s International Litigation & Arbitration Department, in Paris, France.

Youssef Aziz

Student Commissioner

Youssef Aziz is the Student Commissioner on the Bureau of the African Society of International Law and is currently a J.D. student at New-York University, USA.

Tafadzwa Pasipanodya

Vice President

Tafadzwa Pasipanodya is a partner in Foley Hoag LLP’s international litigation and arbitration department and co-chair of its Africa practice.

Ines Ndonko Nnoko

Treasurer

Inès is an international lawyer specializing international environmental law and natural resources in Africa.

Isabelle Rouche

Secretary-General

Isabelle Rouche is a partner of the Africa’s international law firm Asafo & Co. and practices international litigation and arbitration.

Nyanje John

Commissioner

Nyanje is a Doctoral research and teaching fellow for the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence at the University of Bayreuth in Germany and the Leibniz University in Hannover Germany.

Partnership with ILA Paris 2023: The International Law Association will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2023 in Paris, France. The African Society of International Law looks forward to being part of this event organized by the International Law Association Branche française, and coordinated by Catherine KessedjianFranck Latty, and their team.

Partnership with REAL: AfSIL is thrilled to announce that it is supporting a newly created organization: R.E.A.L. - Racial Equality for Arbitration Lawyers. REAL is an organization looking at the representation of underrepresented groups in international arbitration. Tafadzwa Pasipanodya, AfSIL's Vice-President, is part of REAL's steering committee.

Paris Arbitration Week: AfSIL’s Dispute Resolution Interest Groups will host a launch event under the auspices of the Paris Arbitration Week on 28 March 2023 in DLA Piper, Paris France. To learn more and register, please visit the PAW website.

2023 AfSIL Conference: The Society will held its 13th Annual Conference on 27-28 October 2023 on “Africa & the Governance of Global Commons” in the headquarters of the African Union, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. More information here.
